UWE KOWSKI

On 17 February 2007 the Mary Boone Gallery, in co-operation with Galerie EIGEN + ART, Leipzig/Berlin, will open at its Chelsea location an exhibition of new paintings by UWE KOWSKI.

Uwe Kowski attended the famed Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in his native Leipzig immediately prior to the reunification of Germany in 1990. Following that event, artists from the West began to avidly seek the school for its academic traditions, giving rise (and international attention) to the “New Leipzig School”. Kowski’s position on the edge of this social, political, and artistic sea change is reflected in his paintings: they bring together convention and innovation, chaos and order, figuration and abstraction, objective surface and painterly illusion.

The composition of each painting is loosely structured on a grid, with the most literal of devices – words – used to order real space from an otherwise turbulent field of lines and forms. Individual letters appear at once to be coalescing from expressive brushstrokes or consumed by them. This ambiguity is heightened by an erratic use of color and patterning.

The exhibition, at 541 West 24 Street, will run through 17 March 2007. Please contact the Gallery if we can be of further assistance, or visit our website: www.maryboonegallery.com.
